Exploring the colorful legacy of Oaxacan painter, Didier Mayés

Updated: Dec 15, 2023

Over the weekend, I had the honor of attending the inaugural exhibition, "El Patio de Mi Casa," hosted by the Serrano Gallery in Houston. The event was expertly curated by Valentina Atkinson, the gallery's owner, and featured an impressive collection of artwork by Didier Mayes, a contemporary Mexican master hailing from Oaxaca. Mayes is renowned for his abstract and playful approach, showcasing a vibrant and imaginative array of pieces.

The exhibition highlighted some of Mayes' most representative works, emphasizing his distinctive style characterized by characters with oversized heads, colorful symbols, and dynamic patterns that embody ideas and creativity. It was a truly humbling experience to be in the presence of such a talented artist and to witness firsthand the mastery displayed in each piece.

Being able to explore the creative minds of these artistic masters has been a privilege, providing an invaluable opportunity to learn and gain insights into the intricate process of their craft. I am deeply grateful for this enriching experience and the chance to immerse myself in the world of these great artists.
